General

ZA2024TEA568A101 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 The South African food system faces a food system paradox. Despite its upper-middle-income status and comprehensive policies, malnutrition, unsustainable agricultural practices, territorial imbalances, and economic exclusion persist. Key transition challenges include improving nutrition, sustainability, fairness, and governance. Policy solutions entail reducing food costs, expanding child-centred interventions, promoting agroecology, reforming and applying regulations, fostering inclusivity, and enhancing governance through stakeholder engagement. Responsive food system planning at a local level, and the implementation of well-designed interventions are central to addressing these challenges. Action research methods and an urbanism framework are used by this project to co-design implementation strategies for addressing food insecurity, housing precarity and climate change mitigation and adaptation in South Africa. The focus is on knowledge co-production with local food system stakeholders.
