General

EC2024TEA547A101 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 The project aims to safeguard Ecuador's paramo wetlands and volcano glaciers via a data-driven monitoring framework. These ecosystems are crucial for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Leveraging artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial systems, the initiative focuses on assessing wetland health, water availability, and glacier dynamics, targeting sustainable water management and biodiversity conservation, through a collaborative effort between the Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) and its Belgian partner, KU Leuven. Expected outcomes include improved ecosystem health insights, data-driven decision-making for local stakeholders, and robust policy development support. This approach ensures the effective use of high-tech solutions to monitor ecological changes and addresses critical water scarcity issues, aligning with SDGs 6, 13, and 15. By fostering international partnerships and enhancing local research capacities, the project also supports SDG 17.
