The first phase of the AMU-IUC programme targeted capacity development in teaching and research to empower AMU and its graduates to design sustainable solutions answering the region’s considerable challenges. The AMU-IUC mid-term shows that the 1st phase has performed quite well. The capacity building, the newly gained knowledge, and skill have already left a significant footprint at AMU and the application of some results from 1st phase already started to stimulate positive community‐based intervention. The second phase of the IUC will at the same time maintain the academic and development objectives set out in the first phase while adding two crucial components targeting the dissemination of the research findings and focusing much more on outreach, and introducing gender mainstreaming and the LNOB principle at transversal level. In order to reach these objectives, the project has been formulated into 5 research sub-projects (RSP’s) and 2 transversal institutional subprojects (TISP’s). AMU-IUC sub-projects outcomes are well integrated with SGDs and are in line with country, regional, and local community-specific needs.
