Coral reefs in the East African region (EAR) support high biological diversity that sustains small-scale fishery (SSF), and thereby the livelihoods of millions of vulnerable coastal communities. However, SSF sustainability is threatened by overfishing, ambitions of the Blue Economy, and climate change impacts. Addressing these threats requires a decision-making process that is strongly supported by scientific evidence, which is generated through a collaborative, multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder framework. This is vital for countries of the Global South to design responsible and sound fisheries management and policies. Therefore, in this proposed project we aim to ensure SSF sustainability is achieved through a more informed and evidence-based fisheries management with potential to mitigate the effects of overfishing and improve community benefits in the two EAR countries Kenya and Tanzania. This will in part contribute significantly towards these countries meeting their commitments to SDG1, SDG2, and SDG14.
