In the South-Eastern region of Cuba, medicinal plants are used by the local population in rural areas for their medical care. However, climate change is threatening plant biodiversity and crop production and hence will impact human health in these areas. Therefore, this project aims to gain knowledge on (1) the pharmacological and toxicological evaluation of medicinal plants in these areas and (2) how agroecological practices can support the production of medicinal plants, mitigating the impact of climate change. Through an interdisciplinary and intersectoral (academics, local population, policy makers, professional stakeholders) approach, the project aims to promote the sustainable management of medicinal plants, i.e. production and safe application, ensuring an increased availability and improved medical care for the local population.
