The ICP "Master of Transportation Sciences - Road Safety in Low- & Middle-Income Countries" at Hasselt University is a 2-year multidisciplinary master programme with a unique focus and approach to improving Road Safety in Low- and Middle-Income countries. The ICP Master of Transportation Sciences is reinforced by an incremental project centred around creating a high-quality offer of (blended and virtual) Lifelong learning opportunities. The Lifelong learning pathways we have set out are built around three interconnected pillars: Master Programmes, Short Training Programmes and Open Access Content. These pillars allow that different target groups (regular students, students, civil servants, policy makers, etc.) can be reached. To improve road safety, we base our educational programmes on the Safe System methodology. In the Safe System approach the focus is on protecting people so that if they are involved in (inevitable) crashes, they won't be killed or seriously injured, no matter how they travel (walk, drive, ride, cycle). All parts of the system need to be improved (roads, speeds, vehicles and road users) so that if one part fails, the other parts will protect the people involved. This implementation of system-wide measures is a shared responsibility and calls for a multi-stakeholder approach. Therefore, we will build further on a strong global Road Safety in the South network involving our academic partners from Vietnam, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Rwanda; federal and local governments; NGOs and industry stakeholders.
