The Southern Central region of Vietnam includes a strip of narrow coastal plains extending along the coast of Vietnam. In this region, groundwater aquifers are contaminated by saltwater intrusions. This process is further accelerated by groundwater pumping for irrigation, increase of the sea-level, and the more frequent and prolonged droughts that are both direct consequences of climate change. Saltwater intrusion generates a severe decrease of quality and quantity of water resources and is a direct threat to rice production due to the dependence of agriculture on groundwater resources for irrigation. This project aims at strengthening research capacities and providing scientific databases and management solutions for the sustainable exploitation and utilization of groundwater resources for the agro-food sector in the Southern Central region, hence contributing to climate change mitigation and sustainable socio-economic development of the region.
