General

VN2022TEA533A105 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, rural communities of Vietnam, especially those most vulnerable to the impacts of natural hazards, need to develop effective risk reduction strategies adapted to climate change in order to sustain a resilient development. Current academic capacity to document and forecast the spatio- temporal occurrence of these hazards and their impact is limited, and not based on the most up-to-date technologies. Current risk management policy remains insufficiently informed by scientific knowledge and fails to involve the most vulnerable population in risk reduction. The project aims to increase academic and institutional capacities for rural risk management that reflects climate and disaster risks by using applications of earth observation and citizen science solutions as tools for reducing risks of climate-related disasters, and multi-stakeholder participatory approaches for designing adapted risk reduction measures. The project will focus on several districts of the Quang Nam province, which was severely affected by typhoons, floods and landslides in recent years. This project is structured on a strong collaboration between several Higher Education Institutions in Vietnam, building their capacities through training 2 staff members at PhD level and several others at master level, developing new teaching modules and training lecturers. Through citizen involvement and science-policy dialogue, the project will demonstrate the added value of integrating spatially explicit hazards and risk assessments for a range of hazards in rural land development plans based on a well-documented inventory of past events and robust geospatial modelling techniques supported by the most up- to-date earth observation data. Involvement of the Quang Nam Province disaster management committee throughout the project will ensure the conditions for uptake.
