General

- academic overall objective The research capacities of leading Indonesian research institutes have been strengthened and their international academic level has increased - developmental overall objective (benefits for the society) The development of organic agriculture in Indonesia has been facilitated and stimulated and has increased overall food security, sustainability of food production, farmers' income and farmers' and consumers' health

Results

- Academic specific objective: at the end of the project, a research unit on sustainable farming systems, including organic farming, has been established within ISRI (composed mainly of scientists from the Soil Fertility and the Soil Biology groups) and within the DSS-UGM, strongly interlinked, and that have been equipped and trained to carry out research meeting international standards independently. - Developmental specific objective: organic farming practices in the project areas in West and Central Java have been optimized, and the area under organic farming has increased significantly; this has drastically decreased smallholders farmers' dependence on expensive external agricultural inputs, and increased farmers' income and farmers' and consumers' health in the project area. The self esteem of farmers in the project area has increased.
