General

¿ academic overall objective (related to the capacity building of the university) Introduction of a gastrointestinal oncology programme at the University Hospital ASKH because: - A general medical oncological programme at the ASKH campus in the Centre Marie Curie already exists. - A gynaecological-oncological programme is already started by the French cooperation (prof. Lansac and prof. Schraub). - There is a good surgical base around prof. Yana and dr. Lem. - A surgical oncological programme has to be introduced with important horizontal (departments mentioned above) and vertical (provincial hospitals) interaction. ¿ developmental overall objective (benefits for the society ¿ if applicable) Improvement of public health because: - The number of gastrointestinal carcinoma is increasing. - The medical care programme has an inadequate performance. - A specialised health care programme for gastrointestinal carcinoma is non-existing. - There is an absence of health care education at the level of the population

Results

The current VLIR project wishes to contribute in bursting through this vicious circle. It is the logical continuance of the first successful project ¿Former les formateurs', based on the same group. The project contemplates the founding of a universitary reference centre for the treatment of the gastrointestinal carcinoma with a hatch to the 3 provincial hospitals. A cooperation with these peripheral hospitals already exists between both VLIR projects (contacts with the Belgian Technical Cooperation ¿ BTC). Cooperation in the current project thus is aimed at level 2 and 3 of the Cambodian health care system. The VLIR-project contemplates improvement of the quality and quantity of medical care for gastrointestinal carcinoma.
