Resilient, sustainable, and inclusive rice value chains in Tanzania

The rice sector in Tanzania is more resilient, sustainable and inclusive, contributing to a living income for producers and agribusiness entrepreneurs, including women and youth, while increasing the availability of sustainably produced food products on the market. The ambition is for mainstream rice consumers in Tanzania to have access to affordable and healthy (safe) rice; that is produced sustainably by smallholder farmers that earn an income that enables them to live a precious life, be resilient and regenerate their farms and natural resources they rely on. We hope to affect change in three domains: 1. farmers adopt good agricultural practices, benchmarked against the standard for “sustainable rice cultivation SRP”, to improve profits, enhance environmental sustainability and adapt to climate change 2. private chain actors have inclusive and transparent business relations with sustainable rice producers and offer better quality rice to consumers 3. policies and governance are more favorauble to scale sustainable rice As a cross-cutting theme, the economic relations within the system should enhance gender equality and inclusion of youth. The outcome will build on a successful pilot program executed in Northern-Tanzania between 2017-2021 and will upscale this work in Tanzania’s main rice producing area in the Southern Highlands in Mbeya and Iringa Region.
