General CU2022TEA496A103 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 Food crop production in Cuba has decreased dramatically in recent years resulting in massive import of food products. Sustainable in vitro seedling production is a promising approach for year-through production of healthy plant material, for propagation of new varieties and for seed production. Despite the high potential of in vitro seedling production, plant loss due to stress in the field is the major drawback hindering a large-scale implementation in smallholder farms. In this project, we will use a plant-tailored inoculation (‘biotization…

General TZ2023SIN398A103 01/09/2023 - 31/08/2025 The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology has the potential to help automate processes in multiple domains such as health, agriculture, transport and logistics, promote smart eco-transition and personalized services. However, implementing IoT in Tanzania is lagging due to a lack of IoT knowledge and skills, as well as infrastructure. Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) are expected to champion such initiatives, but most (including Mzumbe University (MzU)) do not have modern laboratories(labs) to carry out projects that will impart…

General KE2019TEA487A103 01/01/2019 - 31/08/2024 In Kenya, malnutrition puts children at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. While agricultural biodiversity includes under-exploited species that may contribute to food, nutrition security, and health, edible insects are still neglected and undervalued. This study examines the interrelationships among agro-biodiversity, ecology, socio-economics factors influencing consumption of formulated complementary foods from fourteen local edible-insects and nutrient intake in infants and young children (IYC).

General CU2022TEA498A103 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 Internet affordability in Cuba is among the lowest in the world (ranked 130th in the world). The government is committed to providing affordable Internet services throughout the country. Due to the lower population density in suburban and rural areas in developing countries, traditional solutions result in higher costs per subscriber, which discourages operators from investing in these areas, thus maintaining, and increasing inter-regional inequality. At the same time, other local financing initiatives prioritize the reduction of capital…

General KE2024TEA554B136 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 The Kenya Demographic Survey shows a gripping narrative: maternal mortality and newborn deaths remain high, with Under-five mortality facing similar challenges. These challenges generate from restricted access to health services and a lack of knowledge about Mother and Child Health (MCH). However, within the Kenyan reality, answers for MCH exist. The reasons are known and the answers lie in education and access to care. This project is fundamental as we unite four Kenyan universities for the first time to address these pressing MHC challenges.…

General PH2022SIN351A103 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 The highly fluctuating, waste-producing and calamity-prone agriculture sector in Southern Leyte, the Eastern Visayas, Philippines resulted in growing interest on fish farming as alternative for food security and revenue gain. However, from previous findings of our extension program, it is learned that efficient fish production by small-scale fish farmers is primarily hampered by the on-and-off and high cost of aquafeeds, disabling production of competitively-priced farmed fish. To aid this, the proposed multi-collaborated project “ISDA” will…

General UG2022SIN360A101 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 The mental health burden in school-going adolescents in Uganda was already high pre-Covid 19 and increased significantly during the pandemic. Only 10-20 % of severe mental cases in adolescents are currently being treated. In this project, school staff in the Masaka and Gulu health districts will be trained to recognize early signs, screen for common mental health problems and make referrals via Uganda’s digital health platform. District Mental Health Advisory Boards will be set up in order to create a multi-sectorial mental health policy at…

General BO2022TEA495A105 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 Sustainable development in Bolivia has been linked to the integrated management of territorial planning. This concept promotes efficient use and management of "life systems"[1] as a pre-condition for "living well" while reducing negative anthropogenic and climate change impacts on the environment. This project seeks to strengthen territorial governance and management by bridging academic knowledge with Indigenous and Local Knowledge (ILK) and reaching policymakers by building a transdisciplinary learning-research community. The project is a…

General PE2022TEA519A102 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 Speaking openly about vaginal health is taboo in Peru, and public attention to intimate female care has been neglected for decades. For instance, during the present pandemic, several primary health care centers shut down gynaecological consultations, affecting women suffering from vaginal infections. With the current Laura 2.0 project, we aim to create a national (in Peru) and international research network investigating on vaginal health by actively engaging several key stakeholders from society and academia. Higher education institutions (…
