General CD2022SIN335A104 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 Due to genetic and environmental factors, the region of Katanga in DR of Congo, is the most severely affected by sickle cell disease. These genetic variations also cause patients to develop more severe forms and are at much higher risk for stroke from childhood and adolescence. There is almost no rehabilitation care for these patients, who will therefore have important motor and cognitive disabilities throughout their lives. The use of virtual reality has shown promising results in the management of stroke to reduce motor and cognitive sequelae…

General VN2022SIN363A101 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 The overall goal of this project is to support women living in the rural communities of the Vietnamese province Hoa Binh, who are active or interested in tourism, to get away from an enduring situation of vulnerability and inequality and become empowered social innovators in sustainable tourism. To achieve this goal, academic partners and stakeholders from the public, private and civil society sectors will work together in the co-production of new knowledge in a Participatory Action Research, comprising mapping exercises and multi-actor…

General ZA2024TEA565A101 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 South Africa is the epicenter of the HIV epidemics and 98% of HIV infections are with subtype C. Most HIV cure studies involve subtype B, predominant in the West. Dr. Debyser pioneered cure strategies for subtype B, using LEDGINs, small molecules that inhibit the interaction between HIV integrase and the cellular host factor LEDGF/p75. LEDGINs retarget HIV integration into regions of the chromosome where HIV is not transcribed. This strategy is referred to as "block-and-lock" and remains to be tested with subtype C. Dr Madlala has access to…

General KE2024TEA555A103 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 The Kenya Vision 2030, the National Water Policy 2021 and the United Nations SDG 6 all aim at improved access to affordable clean drinking water especially for the most vulnerable people. This is, however, greatly impeded by severe pollution of water resources. To contribute to the long-term desired change, this project defines 5 action points: (i) research and educational capacity building with a key role for staff members and postgraduate students as change drivers, (ii) comprehensive monitoring of conventional and emerging water contaminants…

General BI2022SIN329A101 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 Afforestation is needed to mitigate soil erosion and the rapid sedimentation of reservoirs for hydropower production in western Burundi but needs to be selective, as the dense population of farmers in this area also requires land for crop production. Decision support systems are useful to find compromise solutions but require good quality data on current land cover distribution and topography. Drone acquired imagery can offer such good quality data at low cost, but the re-quired trained personnel is missing in Burundi. Therefore, this project…

General KE2022TEA515A101 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 Freshwater ecosystems are considered biogeochemical hotspots for both carbon and nitrogen transformations: they receive material from the catchment via surface runoff and groundwater, and only a third of the particulate material they receive is estimated to reach the ocean. Land-use and catchment characteristics have a strong direct influence on the downstream sediment, carbon and nutrient fluxes, which thus change due to e.g. agricultural activities or land use changes. This can have important negative effects on downstream water quality and…

General RW2022TEA524B141 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 The UNITED for Health initiative builds on previous VLIR-UOS South Initiative sponsored work in Rwanda in partnership with KULeuven and University College Leuven Limburg. Since 2019, UNITED for Health has grown into an initiative now co-owned by the University of Rwanda and the Ministry of Health/Rwanda Biomedical Center. It aims to strengthen the healthcare system in Rwanda through creating synergies between universities, care providers, NGOs, the private sector and policy makers in the health sector. Through an online presence and face to…

General VN2024TEA576A103 01/09/2024 - 31/08/2029 Food safety is a global public health concern whereby the South-East Asia region is impacted the most. Reports from Vietnam on Anisakidae, fishborne parasites, indicate an alarming potential public health problem. This project aims to contribute to the needed capacity and awareness creation and to build a comprehensive knowledge about the hazards and the risks to consumers, indispensable for the development of control strategies, thereby supporting governments to substantially reduce disease burden.

General UG2022TEA531B134 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2027 The traditional agriculture in northern Uganda is characterized by low production and productivity that does not meet the nutrition needs of the growing human population. Many farming households operate on small pieces of land for agriculture. Consumed food is nutritionally imbalanced, the production systems are not diversified, access to nutritious, high protein foods such as meat and eggs are either inaccessible to most people or too expensive to import from abroad and food production systems are not sustainable in the long term. Communities…

General ZA2022SIN356B101 01/09/2022 - 31/08/2024 In this project, we improve urban recycling practices in Johannesburg through participatory action research. We re-contextualize waste reclaimers’, residents’ and administrator’s field knowledge within industrial design research and the creative arts. We set up an Upcycling Lab for Metal, Plastics and Paper, we develop three upcycling prototypes, we develop more effective, visual based sorting schemes for local government and we increase citizen engagement with an upcycling community parade. In that manner, we aim to respond to the low level of…
