General

Improved health, protection, and resilience of communities and ecosystems bordering Nyungwe and Akagera National Parks through One Health promotion The outcome will ensure intersectoral collaboration and coordination among human, animal and environmental health professionals, as well as within communities, in mitigating health risks through improved preparedness for, and in response to, human and animal disease outbreaks. The outcome will increase food security and income for vulnerable households and preservation of ecosystems. The capacities of local partners and stakeholders will be reinforced and knowledge and lessons learned will be shared. The project aims at bringing together partners in the human health, animal health, and environmental health sectors to enhance safety, protection, resilience and create capacity to survey, monitor, diagnose and understand the drivers of disease at human-animal-environmental interfaces. The project will be implemented in the areas surrounding Nyungwe and Akagera National Parks in Nyaruguru and Nyamagabe districts in the southern province and Kayonza District in the eastern province. The project will be implemented in partnership with local organizations (IMBARAGA and ARDI) and in close synergy with the Belgian Red Cross and ADA. National institutions (local authorities, RAB, RCVD, MINAGRI, MINISANTE, RDB and academic institutions) as well as private institutions like SACCOs and Africans Parks are also key stakeholders. The main project activities range from NRM management activities, strengthening human/animal and environmental health services, establishing surveillance system to prevent health risks, enhancing community economic resilience and ensuring sustainable food production, strengthening CBO & CSO, and supporting service providers through access to credit and small grants.
