General

Rikolto’s program in Indonesia is rooted in robust and long-term established partnerships and focused on strengthening rural farmer groups that produce rice, cocoa, coffee and cinnamon. The new areas of work continue in those areas of Indonesia (for example East Nusa Tengara), which are remote from economic centres. Rikolto continuously adjusts its joint strategy to address the changing socio-economic parameters and environmental limitations. Rikolto embraces the need to work with a new generation of farmers (youth), build on both genders, and the necessity to support them to become profitable farmers. Rikolto and its partners are committed to reaching a critical mass of producers through the collaboration with commodity platforms and government institutions. The program is in touch with consumers providing the link for farmers towards domestic urban and international premium markets. Rikolto focuses on developing innovative practices which enable farmers to grow in a healthy environment economically. The specification of standards and establishment of internal control systems allow us to demonstrate our impact and add marketing value to farmers products. The program looks at the landscape in which farmer organisations operate, identifying ecosystem services and payment models which ensure that these ecosystem services are maintained for future generations. Amid the unsustainable agriculture expansion that tends to exclude smallholder farmers, Rikolto’s work is to protect Indonesia’s environmental heritage.
