General
In Lebanon, the city of Tripoli has been affected by multiple crises over the past few years, leading to increased vulnerability among its residents. The city's population, estimated at around 250,000, includes approximately 35,000 registered Syrian refugees living within the city and nearly 90,000 in neighboring areas. This influx of refugees has led to heightened tensions between Lebanese host communities and Syrian refugees. According to Oxfam's research from 2020, nearly 90% of social services in Tripoli were not provided by government entities. The city's residents, particularly those who are unemployed, are in dire need of immediate aid. To address these needs and break the cycle of vulnerability, local civil society organizations (CSOs) play a crucial role in promoting intra-sectarian cooperation, civic participation, and inclusion. However, they operate in a volatile political and socio-economic context that necessitates a high degree of adaptability to respond effectively to citizens' unmet needs. The Empowering Vulnerable Communities project aims to provide immediate financial support to households in Tripoli, with a focus on maintaining childcare and household duties. This project falls under the sector of Multisector aid (general) and is part of Oxfam Solidarite asbl's efforts to promote resilience in Tripoli. The project is funded by DGD D5 and aims to contribute to medium and longer-term needs, ultimately helping residents meet their basic survival needs during times of shock while also addressing the underlying structural issues that perpetuate vulnerability.
