By the end of the project period, conflict affected vulnerable rural households, especially landless and female headed households, in 4 tabias (Endalgeda, Weraetle, Daya Alitena, Arae) of Irob district have an improved sustainable livelihood basis that is more resilient to economic, climate, and humanitarian crises, and enables them to seize opportunities and realize aspirations. Before the war of 2020, drought-prone Eastern Tigray was already chronically food insecure with severely constrained livelihood options. Crop production covered only a quarter of poorer households' food needs, and cash income opportunities were few. The devastating violent conflict came on top of the extreme drought in 2019 and the locust invasion and Covid-19 restrictions in 2020. The WFP FEWS network has labeled the food situation in Tigray in February 2022 as ‘famine’ (phase 5). This program, carried out in the immediate aftermath – or even in a latent context – of severe violence, aims to improve in a structural way the livelihood base of conflict-affected vulnerable households, mainly female headed and landless households.
