General

Flemish local governments implement sustainable and coherent policies by using the 2030 Agenda framework. VVSG’s program ‘GLoBe’ (Goed Lokaal Bestuur) in Belgium is committed to good local governance for sustainable and coherent policies, based on the framework of the 2030 Agenda. The intervention in Belgium is situated at the strategic level and aims at aligning local policy processes, partnerships and municipal internal organization with the 2030 Agenda. Its 3 basic principles and 17 goals provide an excellent framework for inclusive, integrated and multi-stakeholder governance. This should accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda and result in participatory and effective policy implementation and service delivery, which in turn strengthens legitimacy and trust in the local government. The local elections of 2024 are an important momentum and window of opportunity to align the local policy cycle, including planning and monitoring instruments, to the 2030 Agenda and to strengthen political comittment. Throughout the program, local officials and representatives will receive expertise, support and concrete tools to contribute locally to the 2030 Agenda and to inform and engage citizens, stakeholders and partners. Sustainable development is a global challenge and doesn’t stop at municipal boundaries. Therefore, the program will explore and set up innovative forms of international cooperation, with a view to achieving the 2030 Agenda in all countries (SDG 17). In addition, the program provides for the start-up of an expertise hub that builds and disseminates knowledge of good local governance for sustainable cities in function of international cooperation. Covid-19 has increased the importance of both the Agenda 2030 and the role that local governments play in its realization. GLoBe supports them to fully take on that role, as the 2030 Agenda is the framework par excellence for short-term recovery and long-term transition to a resilient, sustainable and inclusive society.
