Disclaimer: Country borders do not necessarily reflect the Belgian Government's official position.

General

Business Development Support via grants is a project aimed at strengthening the capabilities and supporting the activities of businesses in developing countries, particularly those with lower to middle income. The project falls under the sector of Banking and Financial Services (24xxx) and is implemented by the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO). The project's scope includes providing technical, financial, administrative, social, environmental, and governance assistance to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MKMO) in the intervention countries. The goal is to improve the performance of these businesses on economic, social, environmental, and developmental levels. The project's feasibility and viability are assessed through a study that defines measurable, achievable, and realistic objectives for each context and provides the necessary resources to realize them. This project was established under the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries Act of November 3, 2001, which regulates matters as stipulated in Article 78 of the Constitution. The intervention structure includes investment funds, holding companies or investment firms exclusively focused on businesses based in the intervention countries, as well as banking and non-banking financial institutions such as commercial or cooperative banks, microcredit institutions, leasing companies, factoring companies, and insurance companies that offer services to businesses and populations in the intervention countries. The Belgian State and the Belgian Society for International Investment can participate in BIO's capital and provide any other form of business financing. Companies with experience in foreign investment or those specializing in local entrepreneurship financing in developing countries, as well as organizations and enterprises whose local entrepreneurship financing in developing countries is part of their social mission, can also participate.
