General
The KBIN project, titled "Contribution to the organization of the second international conference on Biodiversity in the Congo Basin," is a collaboration between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences. This environmental protection project, specifically focused on biodiversity, falls under the top sector of Environmental Protection (41xxx). The project aims to organize a second international conference on biodiversity in Kisangani, DRC, in February 2023. The first conference in 2014, primarily funded by Belgium, saw significant involvement from local and regional stakeholders. This conference drew attention from several international stakeholders who expressed interest in supporting or becoming involved in the second edition of such a conference. The issues to be discussed include current and future challenges related to periodically emerging zoonotic epidemies, global climate change, massive deforestation, and steep demographic growth in the region. The conference aims to mobilize novel science-based answers and translate them into adequate policy measures. It also seeks to address societal aspects, climate-biodiversity interactions, and mainstreaming efforts in Africa with UNEP-WCMC, biodiv info, World Resources Institute, and Theodore Trefon. Local organizers include L'Universite de Kisangani (UNIKIS) and the Centre de Surveillance de la Biodiversite (CSB). Other supporting organizations include the Ministere de l’Environnement et du Developpement Durable (RDC)(MEDD), The National Focal Point to the CBD (RDC), GIZ delegation, Kinshasa, The Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences, Brussels, and USAID delegation, Kinshasa. The project is part of a framework agreement between DGD and BELSPO, requiring financial and narrative reporting about additional subsidized activities reinforcing research networks and regional partner organizations in the North as well as in the partner countries of the Belgian Development Cooperation, even if they are not already included in the Framework agreements. The required reports will be provided no later than 9 months after the end of the Conference.
