General

This proposal is aimed at improving food security in six districts in Gaza Province by means of strengthening two membership organisations - UNAC and SINTAF - that are presently operating in the province and that have as aim to improve the livelihoods of peasant farmers and farm labourers and their families. The Belgian Fund for Food Security (FSNP) together with de Technical Secretariat for Food Security (SETSAN) have identified the most vulnerable districts in Mozambique in relation to food security (see map below). From April to June 2010 under the coordination of SETSAN, four UN agencies, two Belgian NGOs (FOS and DISOP) and the Belgian Technical Cooperation (BTC) have identified six districts in Gaza Province, Mozambique as the intervention zone for a future FSNP programme. These are Guija, Massingir, Mabalane, Chicualacuala, Chigubo and Massangena. Two of the selected districts (Chicualacuala and Massingir) have a common border with South Africa and their territory covers the Transfrontier Kruger and Limpopo National Park. Two districts (Chicualacuala and Massangena) border Zimbabwe.

Results

The UNAC/SINTAF model of support and service delivery is replicated to enhance the livelihoods of rural communities in varying agro-ecological zones beyond the initial pilot districts. (after 2015)
