Disclaimer: Country borders do not necessarily reflect the Belgian Government's official position.

General

The WHO Access to Medicines 2025-2028 project is a multi-partner initiative aimed at advancing geographically diversified and sustainable manufacturing of quality-assured health products and technologies. This project is part of the Health sector, focusing on Basic Health and Infectious disease control (12xxx), and it falls under the Top sector of Health. The project's inception is in response to the 2023 Political Declaration on "Universal Health Coverage (UHC): expanding our ambition for health and well-being in a post-COVID world," which reaffirmed global leaders' commitment to accelerate progress towards UHC by 2030. The project is driven by the need to redouble efforts towards UHC, acknowledging that it serves as the backbone of SDG3 and a key driver of progress across all the SDGs. Access to health products and technologies plays an integral role for countries' progress to UHC, being essential for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, rehabilitation, and palliative care. The project aims to contribute to the operationalization of the WHO 14th General Programme of Work (GPW14) 2025, focusing on access to quality-assured health products and technologies within GPW14. The project is funded by voluntary pluriannual contributions from international multi-partner organizations, with the Government of Belgium being a significant contributor. The total project cost is €8 million, and it will be implemented from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2029. The World Health Organization (WHO) will be responsible for monitoring and implementing the program.
