General

Rikolto will contribute to a thriving agricultural sector, respectful of the environment and based on a family farmer model, which supports women and youth participation contributing to a more inclusive society. Rikolto's strategic objective in Tanzania will be that horticultural and grains food chains in 3 regions of Tanzania are sustainable and inclusive for smallholder farmers. Rikolto strategy is directed towards structural changes in the agri-food system that unlock the farming potential of a critical mass of small holder farmers. The strategy will use three interrelated pathways of change: 1) strengthening partners’ capacities for collective action, 2) supporting an enabling environment and 3) fostering innovation for an inclusive and sustainable food system. Rikolto will support innovation in three result areas: 1) structured trading systems which are inclusive: 2) flexible approaches for developing smallholder business models and organisations: 3) market incentives for sustainable production and consumption approaches. In all three results areas particular attention will be paid to identifying opportunities for women and youth. Rikolto will work collaboratively with apex associations and research institutes to systematically measure results to enable conversion of evidence into new practices and policies. Rikolto expects to reach 8,000 farmers and 20,000 consumers through its pilots with partners and an additional 32,000 through policy and practice changes.
